Hunger Strike in PKP Group
Workers from the PKP ZLK in Gliwice have started a hunger strike.
The ZLKs are part of the PKP-PLK division of the Polish State Railways. PKP-PLK wants to close ten regional centers. After negotiations with the unions, PKP agreed to liquidate only 4 of the regional centers. But they decided to close the largest one, in Gliwice, which employs 1700 people.
What could be worse for the workers than losing their jobs to liquidation? Not losing them. PKP may transfer people to other cities in the region. If the workers do not except the transfer, they will not be dismissed, but would have "voluntarily" given up their position, which would mean no severance pay.
Today 20 workers in Gliwice and 4 at the Warsaw HQ started a hunger strike to protest the closing of the Gliwice center. Almost the entire staff in Gliwice took a day off. We will follow this protest and report back on it again soon.
