Repression for Warning Strike
The leaders of all four unions at the Wagon Factory in Gniewczyna were fired on June 1 as retribution for a 1.5 hour warning strike held on May 10 in the factory.
The fired union activists are: Marian Wacnik from Solidarity, Paweł Kordas from the Union of Railway Technical Support Workers, Andrzej Kowal from the Union of Technical and Economic Workers and Zbigniew Mączka from the Alternative Trade Union.
The company, which is owned by a Slovak investment vehicle, Bribon Enterprises, claims that there was no legal basis for the warning strike and that the union leaders neglected their work duties and caused losses to the company.
About 760 people work in this factory, making it one of the largest employers in the area around Lancut. 550 of the workers are unionized. Next week, Solidarity wants to organize a protest in front of the factory.
If you would like to send a protest, you can write either to the company or to any of the people listed below with a demand to stop repression for union activity.
